Directions for Use and
Anticipated Results of Miraderm Psoriasis Cream
The only ingredient
in this formulation that is classified as a drug by the FDA is
salicylic acid, which works by promoting exfoliation of the dry scaly
patches associated with psoriasis. However, the salicylic acid is
formulated in a base containing anti-inflammatory agents that work
naturally to restore the skin to a healthy state so that the body can
heal and repair itself in such a way as to prevent the rebound effect
that often occurs with hydrocortisone or other typical psoriasis
drugs.
How long before
one can expect to see results:
The time it takes to
witness improvement depends on the duration and severity of the
disease, and the extent of previous treatments, which may have damaged
the skin and therefore compromise the healing process. Children under
5 years of age will generally experience significant improvement in a
week or less, whereas adults with recent onset (two years or less)
will take about two weeks to show clearing of their lesions. However,
persons who have had psoriasis for |
|
25 years or more and who
have usually rebounded from many previous treatments, may not show
significant improvement for two months, although they will experience less
itching and discomfort almost immediately.
Also, the lesions
on many patients appear to get worse within the first week, and they
should be told that this is natural, as it is due to the body pushing the
lesions to the surface. This apparent worsening will soon be reversed with
continued treatment. Since this psoriasis preparation does not contain
strong drugs that cause rapid clearing followed by a rebound when the drug
is discontinued, one should not expect immediate results. However, because
the formulation works to restore the normal structure of the skin, while
exerting a mild anti-inflammatory effect to subdue the T-cells responsible
for psoriasis, one should not expect the same kind of results obtained
with steroids, UVB, or methotrexate-- all of which work quickly to
eradicate the lesions, but which do not promote natural healing of the
skin so that the disease soon returns with a vengeance. Although the
psoriatic lesions may clear completely with the Miraderm cream, they may
return if the cause of the disease is triggered by an allergic response or
by systemic infection. However, the new |
lesions can be cleared
much more rapidly than was originally the case by using the cream, because
the integrity of the skin was not compromised as occurs with other
treatments.
Directions for use:
Apply a sufficient
amount to cover the affected area (do not apply as sparingly as with
hydrocortisone or other drugs), once or twice a day (or more if there is
itching, as there is no toxicity). Apply liberally at night and, once the
cream has been absorbed, cover with Vaseline or other ointment to provide
a protective barrier. Cover the treated areas with clothes or tissue paper
to avoid soiling the sheets; by morning the tissue will have fallen off
together with the excess Vaseline, and the cream will have all been
absorbed. These directions are required for more severe resistant lesions;
just applying the cream liberally should be adequate for milder disease.
Sun exposure can help to eliminate psoriatic lesions, but frequent bathing
and soaping of areas of the arms and legs that rarely get very dirty can
dry the skin and slow the healing process |
